There have been several stories on the news lately about police cars and police officers being struck from behind while parked on the side of the road. Motorists need to be aware exercising proper precautions when passing a stationary emergency vehicle is not only the safe thing to do but the law!

Section 46.2-921.1 of the Code of Virginia states that the driver of any motor vehicle, upon approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying a flashing, blinking, or alternating emergency light on a highway with at least two lanes in each direction is proceed with caution and, with due regard to safety and traffic conditions, change to the lane farthest from the one occupied by the emergency vehicle.
