Roundabouts are growing in popularity in Virginia

Have you noticed the increase in the number of roundabouts being built at intersections in Virginia? For example, at the intersection of U.S. 15 and U.S. 50 in Loudoun County three roundabouts were built to eased traffic congestion in all directions.

Roundabouts are one of the safest types of intersection designs. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) employs roundabouts to increase safety and reduce confusion. Roundabouts also help reduce:

  • Delays at intersections
  • Crashes
  • Fuel consumption
  • Air pollution
  • Construction and maintenance costs
  • Speeds in residential areas

More than just traffic patterns are changed with roundabouts. They can also enhance the beauty of the intersection and the surrounding area.

There are a few key things to remember about driving roundabouts:

  • Slow down when approaching
  • When entering, yield to drivers in the roundabout
  • Stay within your lane; Don’t change lanes
  • Don’t stop in the roundabout
  • Avoid driving next to oversize vehicles
