VDOT has begun pre-treating hundreds of miles of roads with a liquid compound that includes salt, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride as an anti-icing agent. If you see their trucks on the road just prior to a storm, you may well be seeing this process taking place. They are particularly focusing on elevated roadways, bridges and overpasses.

If you see one of these anti-icing trucks on the road, be very careful. For the first 30-45 seconds after application the product can be very slippery. Be sure to pass these vehicles with caution.
