Al is a Senior Loan officer with Virginia Heritage Mortgage, a division of Virginia Heritage Bank. “I help my clients understand various home financing options by providing visuals to fully understand costs, prices, and options,” Al stated. “I am an expert on conventional and jumbo home loans as well as programs for first time home buyers like VHDA, USDA, FHA and VA and Grants.

Before working as a loan officer, Al spent 20 years as a director of customer services at Freddie Mac where he directed supervision of over 85 staff on all facets of 800 Freddie – their Customer Service Center – which was primarily a business to business technical operations center.

With an interest in financing and a sincere desire to help people navigate the various mortgage financing options, Al decided to step out of his comfort zone from running large-scale operations to a sales position in a 100% commission-based business. It was a bit of a scary move but one that have not only proven to be the right one for Al, but also a good move for those who have benefited from his expertise and personal service when finding a mortgage.

“I take time,” Al explained, “to provide analysis of various mortgage finance options. This process does take time but it helps educate my clients; they feel comfortable making the right decisions.”

Al sees his work in the mortgage industry as a part of the home-buying team. When all of them are working together – the realtor, mortgage lender, title company and other support personnel –buying a home can actually be a really great experience.

“When a customer has the keys to their new home in their hand and I’m taking part in the celebration and excitement of their purchase, I feel great to know that I took part in helping someone attain the American dream of homeownership and a path to wealth building.”

Al Magz, as he likes to be called, was born and raised in Utica, NY. After graduating from the State University of New York at Oswego, he moved to the DC Metro area and has been here every since.

When he isn’t helping clients obtain just the right financing for their new home, he enjoys family outings with his wife, Michele and their three children. He also enjoys stock market investing, biking, golf (when he can get a chance), basketball (although he says he’s getting a little too old for the game), traveling, cruising and relaxing. The last one he says is something he is learning how to do.

He and his family are very active with McLean Bible Church.

Al is also involved with Business Network International (BNI) as a member of Tysons Referral Masters. It was through BNI that Al met Tom Ivey and began taking his cars to the professionals at Tysons Auto Specialties.

“After meeting Tom, I read about him in Washington Consumer Checkbook where he was consistently rated in the top 8% of all mechanics in the Washington Metro area.”

When he was asked to share the reasons he trusts his vehicles to Tom and Tysons Auto, he quickly shared, “Service is done right. You are not getting taken, they deal with you in honesty.”

He also likes the fact that reports of all work done to his vehicles are stored electronically, so he has a history of maintenance, which appears in car fax. This is an important factor when you want resell your car.

“He will give you recommendations on whether you should repair the vehicle or sell it,” he went on to say. “For example, I had a 2000 jeep and after examining it he told me not to lay out any additional expenses, since he was aware of the track record of the vehicle and the amount of work that was needed. He has also recommended the type of car to buy to minimize trips to his shop.”
