Working hard has always paid off for Daryl Schauss. During his high school and college years, summers were spent with a lawnmower in the back of his car and mowing as many yards as he could in a day. When daylight savings time began, he loved it – this meant an extra hour of cutting.

After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering, he went to work for a local company but life behind a desk was not what he wanted.

In March of 1996, with one truck and one trailer, Daryl began Cedar Run Landscaping Company and never looked back. What is now a full-service landscaping and grounds maintenance company, began as a one-man show – knocking on doors, signing up new customers, scheduling projects and doing all the work. Today, thirteen years later, he has a fleet of 14 trucks and 20 full-time employees.

Daryl understood from the beginning exactly the kind of client he wanted to reach and where. He targeted McLean, Vienna, Tysons Corner and, later, Ashburn.

“I specialized in working with single-family home owners who owned approximately a quarter acre lot,” he said. “I knew I could help them make their homes look good while they were able to get back some of their personal and family time.”

Cedar Run has greatly expanded since its beginning, not only in personnel but also the scope of work done. In addition to maintenance, which is still the backbone of the company, they are seasoned experts who offer many other services. They design and build softscapes, such as trees, plants, shrubs, and flowers; hardscapes, such as patios, decks and retaining walls; as well as waterscapes, including ponds, water gardens and fountains.

Flyers and coupon packs were Daryl’s method of marketing in the early days. “When I look back on 1996 through 1999, all I remember is hard work and stress, especially in getting new clients while keeping all my existing customers on schedule.”

In 2001, he added another major marketing strategy, networking. He joined the Vienna Business Network, a chapter of Business Networking International (BNI) and has been active ever since. Currently, he serves as Vice President for his chapter and as an Ambassador for two others.

A few years ago Daryl met and married the love of his life, Moura. Now living in the Ashburn area, they have two beautiful children, McKenna and Kamdyn.

Over the years Daryl trusted Tom Ivey and the professionals at Tysons Auto Specialties to maintain his company fleet and personal vehicles. This was especially important in the early years when Daryl was buying older trucks to expand his fleet.

“I trust Tysons Auto. They look at the problem and let you know what honestly needs to be done and what can be scheduled for later maintenance.

“Tom has built a solid local business,” he goes on to say, “by doing things right for his customers. He gets it! If you take care of someone well, they will come back… again and again.”
